- FT.com / Companies / Technology - Brussels fines Intel record $1.4bn: Intel, the world?s largest chipmaker, has been fined a record ?1.06bn ($1.44bn) by Europe?s competition authorities for abusing its dominant market position and using illegal sales practices to encourage computer manufacturers to carry its micro-processo r chips.
- Europe Fines Intel a Record $1.45 Billion in Antitrust Case - NYTimes.com: BRUSSELS ? The European Commission fined Intel a record 1.06 billion euros Wednesday for abusing its dominance in the computer chip market, the strongest sign yet that regulators worldwide are serious about opening the technology sector to competition.
- Intel Fine Jolts Tech Sector - WSJ.com: European regulators hit Intel Corp. with a $1.45 billion fine -- the largest ever assessed there for a case involving monopoly abuse -- and called for changes in the way the U.S. company sells the microprocessor s at the heart of most of the world's PCs.
- lawjobs.com Career Center - $1.45 Billion Fine Against Intel Kicks Chipmaker Battle Into Overdrive: Even as Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and its lawyers at O'Melveny & Myers celebrated the $1.45 billion fine handed down by the European Commission on Wednesday against rival Intel Corp., they were rolling up their sleeves for impending fights between the chipmakers in the United States.
- A Giant Step Backward In Antitrust Law - Forbes.com: This past week Christine Varney, our new Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust, charted what she terms a more "vigorous " course of antitrust enforcement. Starting from the premise that the Bush antitrust Report Competition and Monopoly: Single Firm Conduct under Section 2 of the Sherman Act took a too passive view toward antitrust enforcement, Varney unilaterally "withdrew " the Report, effectively immediately, in her May 11, 2009, speech before the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Bad move.
- FT.com / Technology / New Technology Policy Forum - The European Commission strikes again: On May 13, 2009, the European Commission fined Intel just over ?1bn for its supposed abuse of its dominant market position in violation of Article 82 of the EC Treaty. That decision marks yet another effort by commissioner Neelie Kroes to ratchet up the enforcement of EC competition policy, all in the name of preventing consumer harm. Yet the devil lies in this one detail. The aggrieved ?consumer? of Intel is its long-time junior rival, AMD, which filed three separate complaints against Intel between 2000 and 2006.
